The ex-Red and current Sky pundit wouldn’t have minded a signing or two in the January window but trusts the club know what they’re doing.

If Liverpool were to end up making any moves on transfer deadline day beyond a loan departure or two it would be shocking. In the thick of a title push and into the Champions League knockouts as the top side from the league phase, Arne Slot’s side has quality, depth, and no reason to make signings for the sake of it.

That might annoy some online fans who enjoy the dopamine hit of new signings more than they enjoy watching the players at the club play football, but it’s the unquestionable reality as we head into the final hours of the January window. And as far as ex-Red and current Sky pundit Jamie Carragher is concerns, it’s a hard stance to argue with.

“There’s areas of Liverpool’s team that can be improved,” Carragher noted on deadline day. “But I think that is for the summer. Centre forward they could improve. I think attacking midfield is another. A left sided defender, too. If those players were available, I’m not sure they would do the attacking ones because they have enough numbers.

“I think they need to sign a left back—or a left-sided centre back—but I am sure they will come in the summer. But for me, I have that much trust over what these guys tend to do over the last eight to ten years. Even if I think they should buy, I look at the operation at Liverpool and go: they know more than me.”

With Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister capable of playing the eight role for the Reds while Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott provide depth—the latter so far struggling to see the pitch with any regularity—some would argue they already have more than sufficient numbers and quality for those attacking midfield roles.

Few, though, would quibble with the idea that at the moment this group’s top weak area appears to be at centre forward where Darwin Nuñez has struggled under Slot and Diogo Jota continues to struggle for fitness, while there are legitimate questions about defensive depth and either the age profile or fitness history of certain players.

For now, though, neither appears to be an especially pressing concern—and uncertainty surrounding the long-term futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold with all three out of contract at the end of the season make for a situation where the club may not yet know exactly what their needs there are going to be.

“Every fan gets excited about players coming in,” Carragher added regarding the club’s so far and expected to continue through the close of the window inaction in the January market. “I would love Liverpool to sign another defender—but I trust these people know what they’re doing because their track record says they do.”
